Deadly Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake Hits Central Mexico; Extensive Damage Reported

Less than a month since a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck Southern Mexico another one has happened around 2pm ET this afternoon near Mexico City. Today is also the anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake that left thousands dead. Due to the anniversary many had or were planning to participate in earthquake drills today.

Exact reports on casualties and damage arent available since this situation is still unfolding. What we do know is theres reports that many buildings have collapsed trapping people inside. Officials have confirmed at least 42 deaths, but thats likely to rise as recovery efforts continue.

The USGS is estimating that the death toll could reach into the hundreds and maybe as high as the thousands.

Videos are starting to show up on Twitter showing the aftermath with building collapsed and explosions.
