‘Snow Day’ Forecast: Snow Squalls Likely to Cancel School Buses in Parts of Southern Ontario on Thursday

Snow squalls have made a comeback to the familiar snowbelt areas around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and they're expected to continue throughout the night into Thursday. With conditions resembling a blizzard and up to 30cm of snow anticipated overnight, it is highly likely that many school boards in the impacted areas will declare a 'snow day' for Thursday.
The likelihood of a snow day is highest in all of Grey & Bruce counties, as well as the west and central weather zones of Simcoe County, with a 90% chance of school bus cancellations. For surrounding school boards and along the rest of the eastern Lake Huron shoreline, the chances vary from 50 to 75%.
Given that this event is highly localized to the snowbelt, widespread cancellations outside of the main affected region are not anticipated, as shown on our map. However, a few cancellations may occur in Eastern Ontario due to icy conditions remaining from this evening's flash freeze into the morning. These are more likely for the more rural school boards, for which we have assigned a 10% chance.
For the remainder of Southern Ontario, the likelihood of school bus cancellations for Thursday is very low.
