Southern Ontario: Storm Summary for Wednesday, February 2 to Friday, February 4, 2022

A multi-day snowstorm affected much of Southern Ontario last week between Wednesday and Friday. As part of Instant Weather’s commitment to accountability and transparency, we collected reports from our community after each wave. Thank you to everyone who submitted their report to us!

We also utilized CoCoRaHS which contains an extensive database of reported snowfall totals from all over Southern Ontario. Between the two data sources, we were able to obtain snowfall reports from many locations across the region to compare to our custom forecast for each wave. In the case that we received multiple snowfall reports for a single location, these totals were averaged together to calculate an aggregate total for that location.

Starting with the first wave of the storm which includes snowfall received between Wednesday (Feb. 2) and Thursday (Feb. 3) morning. Our forecast (HERE) had widespread 15-25cm across much of Southwestern and Central Ontario with a localized zone of 20-30cm in Deep Southwestern Ontario.

Based on the data, it’s clear that the system underperformed compared to our forecast with only a handful of locations picking up over 20cm. This is particularly the case in Southwestern Ontario where locations such as Windsor, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia and London had to potential to pick up 20-30cm, but only received around 10-15cm from the first wave. This underperformance is also seen throughout the Golden Horseshoe where most locations in the GTA and Hamilton region reported around 5-10cm. Central Ontario was a bit better where most locations were within or very close to our forecast range, especially in the Muskoka and Kawartha Lakes region.

Why did this first round underperform? We had fairly good confidence based on the data, however, the major issue was the temperature which didn’t fall quite as fast as we expected. This meant that most locations in the south and around Lake Ontario saw a more prolonged period of rain or wet snow before transitioning over to regular accumulating snow. The snow that did fall ended up being wetter which has a harder time to accumulate so totals in the aforementioned regions were significantly cut down. Moving forward, we will be more careful of forecasting higher snowfall totals with the temperature near the freezing mark as the simulated totals don’t account for any melting.

When comparing the data to our forecast, we correctly forecasted around 20% of locations mostly in Central Ontario. This is not up to our standards and we will work towards tweaking our approach as mentioned. The slight underperformance in most areas is seen in the 42% of locations that were within 5cm of our forecast range. Around 25% of locations were off by more than 5cm which is mostly for those in Deep Southwestern Ontario that saw more mixing and a slower switch over. Overall, the error in our forecast was 4.6cm.

Southern Ontario also received a second round of snow between Thursday (Feb. 3) afternoon and Friday (Feb. 4). As per our final forecast (HERE) for the second wave, we indicated that it would miss much of our region and mainly affect the Niagara region and Extreme Southeastern Ontario.

Based on the data it appears that this indeed was the case with most areas reporting less than 10cm except for those along the Lake Erie shoreline. An important disclaimer to this data is that we were unable to obtain reports for what we believe are the hardest-hit regions through the Niagara region and into Brockville/Cornwall. We also heavily relied on observations from CoCoRaHS as we only received a handful of reports from our community. Between the two sources, we were still able to estimate totals for 49 different locations.

Our forecast for the second wave compared to the collected data shows that it performed a lot better compared to the first wave. Just under 80% of locations were within our forecast range with a slight overperformance so another 12% were within our local range. The average error in the forecasted snowfall totals from our forecast was 0.7cm.

Preparing for an Ice Storm: What You Need to Know

In advance of the ice storm anticipated to impact the province, we at Instant Weather want to make sure that everyone is ready in the event of potential widespread and long term power outages. The impact of an ice storm is not just dependent on the amount of ice accretion, but also the winds associated with the storm. This is summarized using the Sperry-Piltz Ice Accumulation (SPIA) Index shown below.

It is important to be prepared for these situations so we have put together a list of items you should have on hand in case of an emergency:

  • Flashlight (windup or battery operated)

  • Radio (windup or battery operated)

  • Extra batteries

  • Portable cell phone charger

  • Water (2 litres per person per day)

  • Non-perishable canned or dried food

  • Manual can opener

  • Blankets

  • Candles and matches or lighters

  • First aid kit and any prescriptions/medical items

  • List of emergency numbers

  • Cash

  • Gasoline

Not sure what kind of food to have ready? Dried food like rice and pasta along with canned tuna can go a long way. Other items such as bread and granola bars are good for fibre and non-refrigerated fruits like bananas, oranges and apples help break up the high-sodium content found in dried foods. Another staple for many are storm chips. For water, an easy way to store a large amount is to fill a bathtub and use the water for drinking, cooking, and flushing toilets.

Since ice storms occur during the winter and early spring months, keeping warm is a major concern during extended power outages from ice storms. Electric baseboard heaters and space heaters will not work. However, natural gas furnaces will still work, but electrical components such as the blower, which forces the warm air through the vents, will not. There are some propane heaters that can be used indoors, but be careful because outdoor propane heaters produce carbon monoxide, making them very dangerous to use inside a home.

Another item worth adding to your emergency kit arsenal is a generator. Generators are available in a variety of sizes and capacities based on individual needs. There are a few things to consider when picking a generator: type, power and additional features.

There are home standby generators that are permanently in place and start up automatically when the power goes out. These units are large and can be quite expensive. There are also smaller, portable generators that either run strictly on gas or on either gas or propane (dual fuel). There is an added benefit of running your generator on propane as it less expensive to run.

Every generator has two power ratings: starting watts and running watts. In order to determine the power of generator you need, you first need to determine what appliances will be running. In the event of an emergency, you may find that the only necessities are the fridge and furnace fan.

It is EXTREMELY important to not run a generator in your house due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

With proper planning and preparation, everyone should be able to get through the stress that comes with extended periods without power. In the case of an ice storm, it’s important to stay indoors and reduce unnecessary travel. Also, we recommend not clogging up emergency lines with non-emergencies. Your power will be back before you know it!

POST-STORM REVIEW: Snowstorm Brings Blizzard Conditions and Buries Parts of the GTHA and Eastern Ontario in Up to 50cm of Snow on Monday (Jan 17, 2022)

This is only an overview of some of the reports we received. A table of all 150+ locations are included at the bottom of this article.


As you likely know by now, a massive snowstorm impacted Southern Ontario earlier this week with the biggest effects being felt early Monday morning. In the end, it brought much of the Golden Horseshoe and Eastern Ontario to a standstill with many major highways being closed for hours and leaving drivers stranded. Widespread school closures delayed the start of in-person learning for many students which continued into Tuesday as road crews struggled to clear the significant amount of snow.

After the storm, we collected snowfall reports from social media and by crowdsourcing reports from our community. We received over 250 snowfall reports which represented totals for 138 unique towns and cities across Southern Ontario. Widespread totals between 40-50cm were reported across Southern Ontario with locally up to 60cm reported in the hardest-hit regions including Oshawa/Ajax and the Niagara Region. Thank you to everyone who sent us their snowfall reports! We couldn't do this without you. We tried our best to include all reports that we could find, but it’s likely that missed some reports. We extracted the data from our snowfall report form on Tuesday afternoon so any reports submitted after won’t be included in this report.

Forecast Analysis

We created an aggregate estimation for each location where we had multiple reports by using the average of the reports. This allowed us to better estimate the range of snowfall totals found within a particular area. Based on this method, the ‘winner’ of the event was Niagara on the Lake with 60cm of snowfall accumulation. However, when looking at individual reports, Oshawa comes out as the winner with 66cm of snow reported by one community member. Fifty (50) of the locations received over 40cm of snow with the average accumulation across our region ending up around 31.6cm.

Here at Instant Weather, we’re always evaluating our forecasts after each event to see how we can improve. Our goal is to continue to provide a source you can rely on and trust to provide you with accurate weather information. For this storm, we compared our final forecast map (LINK) to the 138 aggregate snowfall totals across Southern Ontario. Our forecast was considered ‘Correct’ if the reported aggregate snowfall total was within our forecasted range for that location. Note: When the aggregate snowfall total was less than 1cm away from our range we still considered it to be correct as there can be some error when measuring snow. We found that 49.6% of locations fell within our regular forecast range.

This storm ended up overperforming even the most optimistic projections so we relied more than usual on our ‘local’ range which is intended to catch the few locations that pick up more than the general forecast. This mostly occurred in the GTA and Eastern Ontario which picked up over 40cm and were above our regular forecast range. Our aim is for 15-25% of reports to fall within our local range, but with this event, we ended up with 39.4% of reports that fell within our local range.

Our forecast was incorrect in just over 10% of locations with the bulk of these locations being off by less than 10cm of snow. When looking at the average error of our forecast, we calculated the difference between the actual snowfall total and what we forecasted if the location didn’t fall within our range. This includes locations that fell within our local range so we only considered our regular forecast range. Our average forecast error for this storm was 3.5cm of snow.

  • Kawartha Pine Ridge Public & Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic - Monday’s snowfall and the ongoing clean-up in the Durham Region continue to create challenges for school communities in Clarington. After discussion with the Municipality of Clarington about its ongoing snow removal efforts, and the forecast for more snow this evening and tomorrow, KPRDSB and PVNCCDSB have made the decision that:

    All schools in the Municipality of Clarington will be CLOSED to students and staff today, Jan. 19, 2022, and will pivot to remote learning. As such, all transportation to Clarington schools is cancelled.

  • Near North Public & Nipissing-Parry Sound CathoIic - Buses are cancelled in the following regions:

Schools remain open, parents who transport their children are reminded that they must pick them up.

  • Renfrew County Public & Renfrew County Catholic - Currently ONLY Zone 4 Madawaska area transportation services are cancelled all other area are open and operating. All schools are OPEN!

  • Tri-Board - Due to poor road conditions, continued inclement weather and forecasted afternoon weather all school bus and taxi transportation is cancelled in the Tri-Board Student Transportation Services jurisdiction. The schools will remain open however any students driven to school by parents or guardians will need to be picked up at the end of the day.

  • Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO) - School transportation is cancelled for schools in Trenton and Kingston due to poor road conditions and weather forecasts for the rest of the day.

  • HaIton Public & Halton Catholic - Due to the significant snowfall yesterday and current road conditions, all Transportation services will remain cancelled in Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 and schools will be closed for in-person learning Tuesday, January 18, 2022.   • HamiIton Wentworth Public & HamiIton Wentworth Catholic - The significant snowfall continues to restrict travel. Buses are not running due to current and unsafe road conditions. As such, schools and child care centres are closed and remote/eLearning programming is cancelled, Jan 18.

  • Kawartha Pine Ridge Public & Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic - Please be advised that, due to road conditions, busing to SCHOOLS in Clarington is cancelled for the day. Busing to schools in other STSCO areas may have route delays and possible cancellations as well today. http://stsco.ca

  • Niagara Public & Niagara Catholic - Schools are closed and transportation is cancelled (due to road and sidewalk conditions from yesterday's inclement weather event) for the District School Board of Niagara and Niagara Catholic District School Board.

  • Ottawa CarIeton Public & Ottawa Catholic - All school buses & school vans are cancelled, Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Due to the tremendous amount of snowfall yesterday, many residential roads and minor collectors have not yet been plowed.. Schools are open, however parents/guardians are responsible for transportation of students attending open schools at the end of the day.

  • PeeI Public & Dufferin-PeeI Catholic - Due to snowfall conditions, all buses and in-school instruction are cancelled. All PDSB schools and office buildings will be closed. Parents, please do not send your child(ren) to school. All students will switch to remote learning for the day on January 18. DPCDSB Schools and Facilities to remain closed to students and staff on Tuesday, January 18 and all students will switch to Remote Learning for the day.

  • Toronto Public & Toronto Catholic - The City of Toronto has declared a major snow storm condition. All TDSB schools will remain closed to in-person learning for Tuesday, January 18. Students will not participate in live remote or virtual learning. All school bus transportation has been cancelled for tomorrow for TCDSB & schools are closed for in-person learning.

  • Upper Canada Public & Eastern Ontario CathoIic - Due to poor road conditions on many routes, all school transportation is cancelled today, Jan. 18. Schools are OPEN to staff & students. If your child normally walks to school & will not be attending, please contact your school. Asynchronous learning activities are available.

  • York Public & York Catholic - Due to today’s significant snowfall amount and continuing conditions of roads, sidewalks and school parking lots, schools and board locations will be closed to students on January 18, 2022. Students will learn remotely. Parents do not send your child to school Jan 18.

Preparing for a Blizzard: What You Need to Know

In advance of the storm anticipated to impact the province, we at Instant Weather want to make sure that everyone is ready with the possibility of blizzard conditions when winds of 40km/h or greater reduce visibility to 400 metres or less for at least 4 hours. It is important to be prepared for these situations so we have put together a list of items you should have on hand in case of an emergency:


  • Flashlight (windup or battery operated)

  • Radio (windup or battery operated)

  • Extra batteries

  • Portable cell phone charger

  • Water (2 litres per person per day)

  • Non-perishable canned or dried food

  • Manual can opener

  • Blankets

  • Candles and matches or lighters

  • First aid kit and any prescriptions/medical items

  • List of emergency numbers

  • Cash

  • Gasoline

Not sure what kind of food to have ready? Dried food like rice and pasta along with canned tuna can go a long way. Other items such as bread and granola bars are good for fibre and non-refrigerated fruits like bananas, oranges and apples help break up the high-sodium content found in dried foods. In the event of a power outage, DO NOT use any propane powered stoves or BBQs inside your home or a closed garage as it can result in carbon monoxide poisoning. Furnace exhaust vents should be kept cleared of snow and ice for the same reason. On top of the previous list, it is wise to fill your tub or sink with water in case of a prolonged power outage so that toilets can still be used.

It is also important to have an emergency kit prepared in your car in case you were to ever become stranded during a blizzard. A few of the items are similar to a home emergency kit, but there are many notable additions. If you were to ever become stuck, a small trunk shovel as well as sand, salt, or kitty litter can help tires regain traction. If you are simply unable to move, road flares can draw attention to your location, as well as a whistle. It is imperative to not wander away, stay warm inside your vehicle and wait for help to arrive and make sure that the car’s tailpipe does not get blocked by snow. One of the major causes of loss of life during winter weather events is people becoming lost and succumbing to hypothermia.

During a blizzard, it’s important to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel. Road closures are common in these conditions in order to keep people off the roads. Further, we recommend not clogging up emergency lines with non-emergencies. Soon the storm will pass and then we will all have to begin digging ourselves out.

Rare Tornado in Vancouver on Saturday, November 6, 2021

A very rare occurrence happened this past Saturday when an EF0 tornado caused some minor damage in the Vancouver area. Tornadoes are rare enough in British Columbia but especially in November!

Environment Canada tweeted about a meso-low at 5:07 pm.

Video and photos were captured of a tornado over the Strait of Georgia that came ashore and caused damage to the University of British Columbia.

This video was taken at the UBC Golf Club as the tornado came through. Note the tree falling (0:07) and the blue flash (0:10) as power lines go down.

ECCC issued a Tornado Watch at 5:30pm.

In the video below of the aftermath of the Tornado at UBC you can see tree limbs and tree damage as well as damage to at least one car at the very end of the video.

Power outages were also noted in this tweet and prompted the discussion of the possibility that the tornado may have crossed the Burrard Inlet.

It is confirmed that an EF0 tornado occured at 5:10 pm PDT at UBC near University Golf Club (estimated wind speed 90-110 km/h). Damage includes broken trees/tree limbs, scattered tree debris, uprooted trees, downed power lines, and tree damage to vehicle.

Tornadoes are rare in British Columbia but they do occur. Prior to yesterday there were three tornados reported recently in BC:

  • EF0 in Mission on September 16, 2018

  • EF0 in Saanich on May 21, 2020

  • EF0 in Fort St. John on August 21, 2020

There have also been reports of non-supercell tornadoes over water in the Strait of Georgia. Three concurrent ones on June 9, 2021 and two concurrent ones on June 10, 2021.

Tornadoes in Vancouver or the surrounding area are very rare. The last confirmed tornado in Vancouver was in 1976 and in the area of Vancouver in 1991 (Pitt Meadows):

So grateful that no one was hurt and here's hoping this remains a rare occurrence.

At 2021 Oct 29 1529 UTC the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a “WATCH: Geomagnetic Storm Category G3 Predicted”. A strong G3 geomagnetic storm is possible and places as far south as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon may see aurora (see here for the latest alert).

There is uncertainty in when we can expect the CME to arrive. The CME could arrive Saturday night (October 30th) but there are indications that it may arrive earlier too. You might want to take a look early Saturday morning before sunrise as well as Saturday night if the skies are clear and you are awake.

Just as with regular weather here on earth you can have all the ingredients but severe weather does not occur. We are hopeful that this time all the ingredients will come together as well as clear skies.

The level of geomagnetic activity and where you are located are important factors in determining whether or not you may be able to see aurora. The further south you are the stronger the geomagnetic activity needs to be. As well, weather and light pollution will also affect your ability to see aurora.
